Monday 4th November 2019 saw the official opening of the Thornhill Primary wrap-around service. The breakfast club is free to all children after 8am as it is subsidised by the Greggs foundation. The breakfast club, which runs from 7.30 am during term-time, provides children with a nutritious breakfast and a calm start to the working day. The school also offers after school provision until 5.30pm.

The new purpose-built Wrap facility was officially opened by the Gregg’s foundation mascot ‘Hope’ who delighted the children with a special appearance! The children also tucked into warm croissants and fresh fruit salads. Also there to open the facility was Jonathan Johnson, the CEO of West Lakes Multi-Academy Trust. The school joined the trust in September 2019 and West Lakes MAT have fully supported the project. He enjoyed his croissant for breakfast and spent time talking to the children about the breakfast club and recognised how much the children valued the time together.

‘This has been a real success for our school community. I am so proud of our staff and all the hard work they have put into the project. It has made such a difference to the children and our families. They love the time eating together in the morning. They have improved attention and school attendance has improved too’ ( Executive Head teacher, Mrs Figes)

‘Greggs has been a marvellous sponsor for this project, which helps all children in school to get the right start to the school day. Children from 2-11 years benefit from a healthy meal and good company. The staff love running the breakfast club and it is going from strength to strength. This is a good compliment to our 30-hour Nursery offer, which supports working families with term-time childcare’ ( Donna Hawley, EYFS and Wrap-around care lead)

Parent, Sandra Gallacher said ‘ It offers a calm, inclusive start to the school morning. The children like coming to school so much, so they love coming for extra hours’

‘I like coming to breakfast club because it’s not a rush to eat your breakfast and I like to see my friends.’ ( Layla May Finlay Year 6)
