Scarecrow Day

The early years class at Arlecdon Primary School held a scarecrow day this week as part of the school’s harvest events. The children came dressed for the occasion in scarecrow fancy dress and brought in food donations for the harvest basket that will be donated to the local food bank.

The children used autumn themed art and craft materials to create mini scarecrow puppets to use during their story time, where they enjoyed the book ‘The Scarecrows’ Wedding’ by Julia Donaldson. They also had the opportunity to practise their cutting and gluing skills to make paper scarecrows and enjoyed colouring in harvest themed pictures.

In the afternoon the children worked together in small groups to make big scarecrows, using old clothes, sticks, hay and fabric. The finished products will go outside in the school field.

Early years teacher Helen Finlay said:

“All the scarecrows were especially excited and could not wait to start singing and dancing. We decided we would all sing The Dingle Dangle Scarecrow song and add some dance moves and actions too. I was so impressed with the dance moves and beautiful singing voices that we recorded it for all the parents to watch from the school website.

In the afternoon the children worked in small groups, helping each other to make sure the scarecrows’ tummies were full of hay and that they had happy smiling faces and were ready to go outdoors in our field area. The two bigger scarecrows were named Betty and Harry after the characters in The Scarecrows’ Wedding story. At the end of the day when it was time to go home everyone said they’d had the best day and loved being a scarecrow.”
